How to Play Poker
Poker is a card game played by two or more players. The number of players varies but is usually between 6 and 8. The game is called a ‘pot’, which is the total amount of money bet by all players during a single deal. A player can win the pot by having the highest-ranking poker hand or by making a bet without being called by any other player. However, it is not uncommon to have more than ten people at a table.
The most common way to play poker is to purchase poker chips. The chips are usually provided by the game organizer, so you should have some on hand. Each player is given a certain number of chips. The lowest-valued chip is the white chip, and each red chip is worth five whites. Then, every player in a game of poker “buys in” by purchasing a chip. This is a common practice amongst casinos and is called ‘buying in.’
Unless you’re playing with a live dealer, you must purchase poker chips. A poker chip is an ordinary piece of paper with a sliver on it. You don’t need to use any of them. You can play with any number of chips, and you’re never out of chips. The game is played in rounds with different numbers of players. If you’re playing with one or more people, you’ll need to buy the chips.
