Poker is a card game played around the world. It is played in private homes, casinos, and poker clubs. Generally, players wager over the best hand. The best hand may be one with the lowest cards or it may be a pair of jacks.

Poker can be played with a single player or with up to eight people. However, the ideal number is 6 to 8 players. In the United States, the game is regarded as the national card game.

During the first round of betting, each player receives a card face down. If the bettor wishes to fold, he/she must do so before the dealer deals another card.

After each round of dealing, a betting interval occurs. Each player makes a bet, which must match the previous bet. Once the last bet is placed, the betting interval is over.

Some poker games have side pots that can be won by different players. However, in some variants, the pot is awarded to the lowest hand. Those variants may not take into consideration flushes and straights.

The earliest form of poker was played with 20 cards. Since then, the games have evolved to hundreds of variations. There are even computer versions of the game, developed by researchers at the University of Auckland and Carnegie Mellon.

A typical poker game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Some games, like stud, may use a shorter deck.

Some poker games use a professional dealer. These dealers charge a small percentage of the pot. Professional dealers are typically used in casinos.
